Kent Troutman studied in Beijing earlier this year and will travel back to China to one of its leading financial universities, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Sichuan provenance, to study interest rate policies that would allow microfinance to be an effective poverty-alleviation tool. He wants to use his Fulbright experience to launch a career in the field of economic development policy in the Foreign Service Office or at an international non-governmental organization. He grew up in North Philadelphia, attended Faith Tabernacle High School and began collegiate studies at Community College of Philadelphia before transferring to Drexel in fall 2007.

Karen Miller will travel to Turkey to work on the preservation of historic monuments and bridges,cheap mac makeup sale, educate residents about restoring their historic properties and conduct research at the Conservation and Implementation Office (KUDEB) of Istanbul’s historic Sulemaniye district. She hopes to use this experience to launch a career into historical preservation. She is a Merrick, NY resident and graduate of Sanford H. Calhoun High School.

Kara Spiller, who conducted research in Shanghai this year, will conduct research in tissue engineering at the University of Minho in Guimaraes, Portugal. She will be a member of the Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics Research Group. The site is also the headquarters of the European Institute of Excellence on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Spiller expressed excitement working for a world-renowned tissue engineering laboratory. She grew up in the EastFalls/Germantown area of Philadelphia and attended Mt. St. Joseph Academy.

For my sister’s wedding, my mother had a very crafty co-worker make a card box in the shape of a wedding cake. It was white, it had pearls… okay, so it was a bit cheesey, but it did the trick. My mother saved the card box with the hope that when I (finally) got married, I could use it too. For five years, that card box stood in our basement; it was a resilient card box — unlike everything else down there, it never turned green. Alas, this past summer, my parents sold their house and moved into a (very) small temporary apartment in Manhattan. All their stuff (card box included) was placed in a temperature controlled storage facility off of some exit on the Garden State Parkway. The plan was to find a condo or co-op quickly; move in a couple of months. The plan didn’t work out and the card-box-that-could is still somewhere between the guest room furniture and my baby grand. No worries I said, I will make a new card box. Bigger, better, a bit cheesier than the old. I even found stacking heart-shaped hat boxes at Nashville Wraps. I was planning on ordering them this evening… when, out of nowhere… I discovered this lovely bird cage at Wedding Things. Only $45 bucks + delivery. Woo hoo – another item off my list; no glue gun required.

I was given bits and pieces of advice for my own bridal portrait session from my photographer and various brides before I actually went to take pictures in my dress before the wedding. A couple of friends who have gotten married were surprised to hear of some of the tips, so I thought it might be a good idea to share with the hive as well! Here are some suggestions for your shoot:1) Try to choose a time of year with mild weather. Sometimes this is easier said than done. It pays to try for a cooler time of year when you are wearing a heavy dress, and walking around for a long period of time outdoors. While the heat is not always avoidable, try your best to schedule the shoot during mild weather, even if it means taking your pictures months before your wedding. (Although I tried to plan for the cool weather, my luck it was record heat on the day I took my photos – 4.5 months before our wedding!)2) Bring at least one person along to be your “assistant” for the shoot. I was fortunate enough to have both my mother and my best friend there to help me. Excessive? Maybe so, but oftentimes, you will shoot your pictures in some unclean areas, and it pays to have the extra hands around to help carry your belongings and keep your dress off of the dirty floor.3) Pack a bag of items to bring with you.
