Some brides like to do everything different, and break from tradition wherever possible, but one tradition that is almost always present at a wedding is the bridal bouquet. Historically, bouquets of strong-smelling herbs and/or flowers were carried by the bride to ward off evil spirits on her wedding day. Additionally, flowers have always been a symbol of fertility, representing the children the bride will soon bear. Over time, many flowers have gained reputations for certain qualities, and nowadays many brides select their flowers based on the qualities they are said to represent or the luck they will bring. For example, the marigold is a common feature in bridal bouquets because it is believed to symbolize faithfulness and enduring love.Different references offer slightly different meanings for some flowers, so if you are a superstitious bride, you may want to check with a few sources when deciding on your flowers. One day I started doodling some monogram ideas in the little notebook I keep and stumbled across a design I really liked. Mr. Bunny and my mother responded really positively to it, so I thought I’d see what I could do about messing with it in Adobe Illustrator. Here’s the original:
I can’t show you the (very sad) Illustrator version I ended up with after working on it for a few hours. I was so disappointed and frustrated. I knew the basics of Illustrator. I figured I could make it work, but I was VERY VERY wrong. When I was at the end of my rope, my mom kicked in with her common sense. “Why don’t you call your Aunt Susan?”DUH.Aunt Susan, my dad’s sister, is an art professor at a college in Washington. Of course she’d be able to help.So I bit the bullet and called her. She seemed uncertain about whether or not she had the skills needed to assist me, but she happily connected me with one of her students, who is apparently an expert in computer-generated artwork. Here’s the first set of options Daniel came up with:
I liked the execution, but the concept was actually different than my original, which was symmetrical script “L”s in front of a standard serif font “R.”And here’s what Daniel came back with:
AWESOME. My favorite is the one in the lower left hand corner. I especially love the way the “R” has an art nouveau feel to it. It’s just perfect.Daniel is a college student, of course, and hasn’t done any work like this before, as far as I know. But if you check out his DeviantArt site here, you can see that he’s a very talented artist. Thank you for your help, Daniel! You were a joy to work with!So far, the plan is to use it on the invitations and on other things. We’ll see where else it turns up…Did you break with tradition to use your married monogram before your wedding day?

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I just got back from Jamaica last night, and I am still swooning over the crystal clear waters. I can’t wait to share photos of it with you all. So I am starting the week with a beautiful beachfront wedding all the way from British Columbia, Canada. Alison and Ryan’s wedding is a DIY festival full of sweet details. Alison mentioned she has been “following Ruffled for the past 2 years since I’ve been engaged”, which makes my heart full of glee! Shot by photographer Jamie Delaine.
From Alison, the bride: We wanted our wedding to be vintage-inspired, yet contemporary. We wanted it to feel as though we had found all of our decorations in our grandparents attics/basements and thrown in what modern elements we had lying around our homes. We wanted to add our personal style and touch to as many elements as possible so our guests would feel as though this truly was OUR wedding.

Check back soon for their wedding reception!Wedding Vendors (British Columbia, Canada):Reception venue: Bonniebrook Lodge / Florist: flowers purchased at Petals Flower Farm, Dahlias Galore / Photographer: Jamie Delaine / Wedding dress: Sarah Seven / Veil and hairpiece: Twigs &; Honey / Wedding Shoes: Christian Louboutin / Jewelry: Violette Veldor Boutique, Alexis Bittar / Hair: The Rainbow Room / Makeup artist: Pam Mah / Bridesmaid Dresses: Sarah Seven, BCBG / Bridesmaid Fascinators: Twigs & Honey / Groom’s suit: Hugo Boss / Tie: Paul Stuart / Groomsmen’s suits: Coppley, Club Monaco /Caterer: Bonniebrook Lodge / Dessert: Bonniebrook Lodge / Wedding invitations: Blackstone Press / Umbrellas: Bella Umbrella / Chair Rental: Gibson’s Party Rentals
We just stumbled upon a great wedding gift idea and couldn’t wait to pass it on to you. It makes a great gift for a couple you know very well, or a wedding gift from one spouse to another. It’s a custom comic strip by artist Mark Weber. The six-panel strips on 11×14 paper with drawings based on your own photographs tell the story of your romance. You provide the information, photos, and $200.00, and this unique keepsake is yours in 2-3 weeks!Source
SourceMy grandma used to buy me paper dolls – sometimes as a little gift for a holiday and sometimes just because. I loved playing with them, especially the more vintage-y dolls. I distinctly remember a Victorian set of dolls and a 1950s set. I can’t help but smile when I picture the dolls with their modest underthings and a wide array of clothes and accessories just waiting to be combined in sometimes hilarious ways. Can you say pajama pants with a tennis skirt?Imagine my delight when I spotted a set of paper dolls for the bride! Yeah, that’s right – I became 7 years old in an instant and have been pining for this set ever since.
Source: Save-On-CraftsI love the vintage feel (it’s a reproduction obviously). The set comes in a book like folder with a place to write down who is in your wedding party. Dolls and clothes for a Bride, Groom, Maid of Honor, Best Man, Bridesmaid (but no groomsmen—apparently boys make boring paper dolls) and flower girl. I think it would make a great keepsake that my future children could play with.
Source: Save-On-Crafts
Source: Save-On-CraftsSure, I could add it to my cart and click the purchase button, but I hold back. There is a certain sentimental element around paper dolls for me and even though my Grandma isn’t able to buy this set for me, there is a little girl inside me that secretly hopes one of my bridesmaids does
. Yes I am shameless, I know. Will I be upset if I don’t get to be a 7 year old again and play paper dolls? Not in the least—but they are pretty cool. Are you unable to pull the trigger on certain wedding related items, secretly hoping someone else gifts them to you?

When Jess and Chad finished shooting their engagement photos, they changed into costumes and put a 180 spin on the shoot, doing a Charlie Chaplin silent film inspired session. You know how much I love chic and timeless engagement photos – those that make you wish the photos were of you and your honey, but it’s always fun to see what creative couples come up with. So when Ken Kienow sent over this session, I jumped at the chance to share this unique shoot.

Ken Kienow captured both sides of their session – you can check out their part I from their gorgeous session (with no props or costumes) and more from the Charlie Chaplin fun on his blog.
Jes and Caleb created absolute magic with their wedding, photographed by Carissa of For You Love Me. Would you believe that they planned everything in just under 3 months with a budget $4,000? Believe it, because they did!The bride, Jes has provided some great advice and insight:Caleb and I spend our first six months long distance -him in Nashville, me in Philadelphia. We traveled to see each other as much as possible and we both have a love of public transportation. Caleb’s sister Adalie took our engagement photos in a train museum and we used them in our invitations and that brought a theme of travel into the wedding, but we tried not to push its limits.
Caleb is an Web Interface designer and is all about modern minimalism. I love vintage and modern styles. We wanted our wedding to reflect the pairing of the two — but mostly we wanted a relaxed setting for our family and friends that was simple and beautiful.
Caleb and I planned our wedding in a little under 3 months. And in the last week, we literally had nothing to do but wait for the big day. What helped us was that we decided everything in the first week. Once we had a plan, we put it into a calendar and took it one step at a time. Some days it got hectic and stressful, sure, but we tried to keep the real goal in mind: an awesome marriage, not a perfect wedding. Thankfully, we got both.Wedding Vendors (Lancaster,PA):Photography + Videography: For You Love Me/ Venue: Progressive Galleries/Desserts: Flying Monkey Patisserie /Catering: Bride, Groom, Family & Friends/Invitations: Target / Flowers: Paper flowers by Bride, Groom, Family & Friends/Bride’s Dress: Separates by J.Crew and Boss Black from Saks/Groom’s Attire: Suit from Zara, Shirt from Express/ Wedding Ring: David YurmanStay tuned for Part II!
